Do you ever have times in your life when you don’t know what to do?
In my therapy office I hear people struggling with all kinds of problems.
Often, they feel pulled in different directions.
It might be the desire to start a business but unsure if they can tolerate a possible failure.
Perhaps doing what is best for them isn’t what’s best for a friend or family member.
Sometimes it looks like ending a relationship that isn’t working anymore while fearing grief that may come with the loss.
I hear clients tell me they wish someone would tell them how to go forward after an affair, or the tragic loss of a pet, or how to bounce back from a serious injury.
One strategy is to imagine your own personal board of directors.
Think of 2 or 3 people you admire and respect.
They can be heroes that are real or imagined.
Perhaps there are characters in a story you loved, or a movie that impacted you.
Perhaps it’s a mentor, coach, or family member.
It can even be a future version of yourself, at a time when you have already figured out the solution to your current dilemma.
Take out a piece of paper or open the notes on your phone.
Write down the names of each person on your board of directors.
Specify what you admire and respect about them.
Take a moment to notice what these people have in common.
As you think about your problem, imagine your board of directors and ask them for advice, suggestions, and feedback.
Now take 2 big relaxing breaths (don’t skip this part), pause, and wait for their response.
This is your board and they have important information for you if you can open your mind to it.
After getting the response, give your board of directors a burst of appreciation!
If you need support making changes stick, I am happy to work alongside you.
